After years of debate over the practicality of renovating the city’s community center, the City Commission has accepted the advice of engineers to demolish the former elementary school on Louisville Highway and replace it with a more modern facility and park.
Projected to open in the spring of 2011, the nine thousand square-foot Community Center will house meeting rooms for community events and a banquet hall with seating for over 200. The center is expected to be the home of the Millersville Bluegrass Jam and other concert and entertainment acts, utilizing an indoor stage in the banquet hall and an outdoor amphitheater stage. City leaders also hope the facility will become a regional attraction for businesses and citizens as a venue for conventions and receptions.
The park is expected to offer a relaxing family atmosphere with state-of-the-art playground equipment for children of all ages. Picnic shelters, a walking path and garden areas will be available for everyday enjoyment.
Construction Begins!
The design and permitting process is completed and the demolition of the former school building is about to begin. Environmental protection measures are being installed and hazardous material removal crews will first remove the aspestos products used when the old building was constructed. Demolition of the structure should start just after Labor Day. Construction of the new building will begin immediately after the old building is gone.
